What is engineering?

Engineering is a somewhat broad term that encompasses the various fields that utilize math, science and design to create solutions. What is architecture?

Architecture is a little less broad in scope than engineering because its focus is exclusively on buildings and other structures. Architecture entails the design, planning and construction specifications of building a structure.

Because math and science play roles in the project of erecting a building, engineers are often involved in the process, especially if it is innovative and challenging from a physics standpoint. This is when it could become confusing in regards to what roles each of these disciplines play.

Centuries ago, the architect and the engineer were actually the same person. As science has evolved, the roles of engineers have split off to more specializations that diverge from the roles of the architect.

How do architecture and engineering differ from each other?

Architects are more concerned with the aesthetics and spacial elements of a project, whereas engineers make sure that the design specs are viable so that the building won’t topple over or encounter other structural problems. Engineers have greater expertise in math and physics, but architects possess creative vision and a grasp of aesthetics.

How are these two fields similar?

Architects and engineers both take on management roles for their projects, and they act as the liaison between the clients and the design teams. Both disciplines require an understanding of math and physics concepts, and there are usually licensing requirements for specific applications in professional fields.

Engineers and architects approach tasks from different perspectives. Engineers have a more mathematical mindset, while architects are more creative and theoretical. Consequently, architects tend to have more right brain talents while engineers rely more on their left brain abilities. Because of these differences, both specialists can collaborate effectively when they understand their different roles.
